The Default Diary Mini Course
Part 2: Choosing Focus Areas
So, we’ve established that the purpose of the Default Diary is to gain more control over how much time we’re spending on each area of the business.
Now we need to think about which areas of the business deserve what amount of time.
The important question here is…
What Are Your Goals?
- If your goal is to double your customer base by the end of the year you might want to spend 75% of your time on Marketing
- If you’ve realised that you’ve been neglecting your team and company culture you might spend 50% of your time this month on training, recruitment and culture
Here’s some concrete examples to get you thinking:
In my default diary this month I’ve split up my time like this…
60% – Coaching and Events
20% – Marketing
10% – Team meetings
10% – Running the Company
Mike, my client and Time Management Expert who we’ll meet in Part 4 uses…
30% – Marketing
25% – Sales
25% – Partnerships and Client Work
20% – Running the company
Twitter Co-founder Jack Dorsey uses an even 5-day split…
20% – Monday: Management Meetings
20% – Tuesday: Product Development
20% – Wednesday: Marketing
20% – Thursday: Developers and Partnerships
20% – Friday: The Company and its Culture
Once you’ve decided on your percentages head over to the next section where we’ll construct your actual Default Diary…
