If you want to avoid failing at your New Year’s resolutions and failing at your goals this year like most people do, I’m sharing my 4 top tips to create New Year’s resolutions and to create goals that are set up for success.

Today is tip number 3 of 4, and that is to create goals around your habits, not just around the results that you want to see. The trap that so many of us fall into when it comes to goal setting and resolution setting is just to focus on the end result, just to focus on here’s how many sales I want to make or here’s where I want to get to in my career here’s what I want to happen with my team or with my business. Here are the clients that I want to work on, whatever it might be.

And while it’s very important to know the end goal, to know the results that you’re aiming towards and for your team to know the results that they’re aiming towards, If you only have the results, if you only have the sort of big lofty number in the future, then that doesn’t actually you how to get there.

The best example I can think of here is that the most common New Year’s resolution is I want to get fitter, or I want to get healthier, something along those lines. But imagine someone setting that goal or setting that New Year’s resolution I want to get fitter versus the second person who says I’m going to run 5 kilometres three times a week they are exactly the same goal but which of those two people do you think are much more likely to achieve that goal of getting fitter?

Is it the one who had this kind of vague idea of the end result, or even of the marathon they wanted to run, or whatever it might be, versus the person who set their goals in a way that expressed habits and disciplines and consistency?

I’m going to run 5 kilometres three times a week it’s exactly the same ambition, but by expressing it differently and by focusing on the actions and habits that that are going to get you towards that goal, you’re much more likely to set yourself up for success.

Check out my other videos this week, I’m sharing 4 tips to help you set up your resolutions and your goals for the year ahead in a way that sets you up for success and I’d love to hear how you’re getting on.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Focus on Actionable Steps: Setting goals around habits, such as “running 5 kilometres three times a week,” rather than just stating an outcome like “getting fitter,” increases your likelihood of success. Concrete habits provide clarity and structure.
  2. Avoid the Outcome-Only Trap: Merely visualising the result you want, like hitting sales targets or advancing your career without mapping out the daily disciplines required can leave you directionless.
  3. Build Discipline and Consistency: Habit based goals create a framework for consistent progress. Regular actions compound over time, leading to significant outcomes.
  4. Clarify Pathways for Your Team: In business, results oriented goals should be complemented with clear, habit based objectives for your team, ensuring everyone understands how to contribute to larger goals.
  5. Learn from Common Resolutions: Consider common resolutions like “getting healthier.” Framing these as habits such as preparing healthy meals or exercising regularly—ensures they are practical and sustainable.

The Wrap Up

By focusing on habit-based goals, you lay the foundation for lasting success. This approach bridges the gap between dreaming about results and achieving them through deliberate, consistent action.
