Whenever somebody makes a big claim you’ve always got the right to say “show me the data”.

In that spirit of transparency let’s look at the question Does Business Coaching Actually Work? In the infographic above we’ve collected data from several large studies on business coaching outcomes.

You could argue correlation rather than causation – businesses that are doing well and destined for success are the kind of businesses that tend to hire coaches, not the other way round. So we’ve also included numbers on the kind of things business owners with coaches do differently: writing business plans, measuring performance levels, setting quarterly goals, etc. This suggests that coaching encourages the kind of behaviours that you would expect to result in business growth.

It’s also encouraging to note that many of the world’s top researchers and writers come to the same conclusion. Daniel Coyle’s highly-recommended New York Times Bestseller The Talent Code identifies 3 keys to success i) deep practice ii) powerful motivation and iii) master coaching. Whilst K. Anders Ericsson (famous for discovering the 10,000 hour rule) says “The development of expertise requires coaches who are capable of giving constructive, even painful, feedback. Real experts are extremely motivated students who seek out such feedback.”
