91% of New Year’s resolutions fail, so here’s how to make sure you are not in that 91%. This week I’m sharing 4 tips on how to set the right resolutions on how to set the right goals for this year that are set up for success.
Today is tip number two, and it’s taken from Melinda French Gates. And instead of a New Year’s resolution, she comes up with a word of the year. Here’s why that’s so powerful because instead of saying I’m going to do this; I’m going to achieve these goals and whatever. The word of the year acts as a reminder of how to approach life and how to approach challenges and how to approach opportunities.
Some of the words that Melinda French Gates has used include things like shine and grace and these are just reminders for herself of the kind of person that she wants to be in that year, the kind of characteristics that are going to serve her well with whatever she faces that year.
And the word doesn’t necessarily change every year. I’m going to take a leaf out of Melinda’s book and use a similar phrase, a similar word to what I used last year. And for me personally, my word for this year is consistency.
Because regardless of what my goals are, regardless of what my aims are, it’s that consistency, that discipline, that habit forming that is going to make the difference as to whether or not I achieve the goals that I set out for myself or not.
It’s the consistency of clearing my inbox every single day, it’s the consistency of sticking to my diary every single week. It’s the consistency of putting content out every single week. It’s the consistency of reading and running and learning and swimming and walking, all these things that I want to be doing.
The consistency that is the thing that’s going to make the real difference for me personally that’s the second tip of four that I’m sharing this week to help you create the resolutions, help you create the goals this year that are set up for success.
Check out my other videos for all four tips this week and I’d love to hear how you’re getting on.
Key Takeaways
- Shift from Resolutions to Intentions: A word of the year acts as a reminder of the type of person you want to be, rather than focusing solely on achieving specific outcomes.
- Personalise Your Word: Choose a word that resonates with you and aligns with the characteristics you want to embody or cultivate throughout the year.
- Consistency Over Change: You don’t have to change your word annually. Use it as a building block for long-term habits, as Melinda French Gates demonstrates with words like “grace” and “shine.”
- Anchor Your Habits: Integrate your word into daily routines. For me, “consistency” means regularly clearing my inbox, adhering to my schedule, and creating weekly content.
- Reflect on Impact: Regularly assess how your word influences your actions and mindset. Use it as a tool to stay focused and make decisions aligned with your broader goals.
The Wrap Up
Adopting a word of the year instead of a traditional resolution can lead to greater clarity and fulfilment. Whether it’s “consistency,” “shine,” or another word that speaks to your journey, let it guide your habits and mindset for the year ahead.
